World famous Lascaux caves
St Amand de Coly; this pristine village is famous for the beautiful fortified Romanesque church and is but a rambling walk from La Tournerie. The church is a magical venue for concerts in the summer months.
In 2007 the village became recognised as one of the most beautiful small villages of France.
Sarlat la Canéda; 22kms away, Sarlat is capital of the Perigord Noir and has a whole host of beautiful 15th and 16th century houses in mellow honey coloured stone. There are quite a few pedestrianized streets through which you can amble.
Montignac; Our local town is just 6kms away. The town has a wealth of character as well as an amazing number of good restaurants that can cater for most peoples needs.
The town extends gloriously on both banks of the river with arguably the most beautiful areas being found on the northern bank.
Les Eyzies: - A very special place to visit and on the way from the direction of Montignac there, the village of St. Leon sur Vézère is well worth stopping at (it also has some good restaurants) and a few miles further along the road are the enormous La Roque-St-Christophe dwelling site where the earliest traces of inhabitation date back some 70,000 years.
Perigueux: - Capital of the Dordogne is some 50kms away but the central part of the town and the cathedral are well worth a visit.
Brive la Gaillarde: - 32kms away, this isn’t the most exciting of places as it is a bit of an industrial centre, but look closer and there is a myriad of things to see and do, and the locals aren’t too bad at playing rugby either!
Lascaux Caves; No visit to this area is complete unless you have visited these caves which can be found 7kms away.
The original cave with it’s 17,000 year old paintings was closed in 1963 to stop further damage being caused; however the modern recreation is a brilliant reproduction of the original.
The entire area surrounding La Tournerie has been described variously as; “the most idyllic area we have ever visited in France”; “the most breathtaking countryside”;
“so many amazing places to visit quite literally on the doorstep”; “it would take me years to walk along all the beautiful tracks”.
In no particular order we offer the following locations as a starter for ‘10’, all of which are a short journey away: -
